First Name: James
Education: B.Sc. Mathematics, University of Warwick
Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I grew up in the UK where I studied Mathematics at the University of Warwick. Despite not formally studying finance, it always had appeal as a career where my problem solving ability and competitive nature could be put to good use.
In which activities or hobbies where you involved during your studies?
I was a very keen rower during my time at university. My years in competitive sport gave me a real appreciation of strong work ethic and discipline. These are qualities that I see in abundance at Eclipse.
Could you describe your typical day?
We begin the day with market prep. There’s a discussion of overnight market moves and news. We’ll set ourselves up for whatever the market is about to throw at us. Then the bell goes. Trading can provide a highly charged atmosphere where quick, logical decisions and good communication are absolutely critical.
Once the markets have closed, and the dust has settled, there is usually time for some project work. The markets are constantly changing and it’s imperative that we are always looking for ways to improve and innovate. A good idea is a good idea, regardless of where it comes from. We are given plenty of freedom when choosing projects to work on from a very early stage.
What is unique about Eclipse?
As a result of the flat management structure and the type of people we hire, I have always felt Eclipse has been very good at focusing personal ambition into company ambition. There is very little in the way of office politics. Instead, an atmosphere of collaboration is promoted. There is no stigma attached to asking for help or guidance.
What would you say to someone considering a career at Eclipse?
As an employee at Eclipse, you are part of a meritocracy. You will be given the chance to present your ideas. However, you’ll also be expected to defend them, or even to recognise a better one. If you’re looking to work in a team of exceptionally talented individuals to be challenged, stimulated and, critically, to learn, then Eclipse may be for you.
